Aren't beagles noisy?

When they are on a scent or letting you know there's an intruder somewhere nearby (nearby occasionally being the mailman 2 blocks away), some beagles have a bay that will raise the dead. Some beagles mostly bark, just like other dogs. Some beagles just chuff. A bored beagle is more likely to bay and bark than a beagle that is an integrated and exercised part of the family. The best way to get a beagle to be noisy is to leave it alone a lot. A beagle that is a fully integrated member of the family and that is kept indoors is generally a very quiet dog.

Are beagles hard to housebreak?

The short answer to this is yes and no. Beagle puppies can be hard to housebreak because beagles are, well, a bit stubborn. They also have the second best nose in the dog world (#1 is the bloodhound) and no matter how much you clean that rug - they are still going to know it was a former pee spot and be more likely to use it again. Adult dogs are usually easier to housebreak because they are physically able to \hold it\" for longer periods of time than puppies, giving you an easier time of it in getting on a schedule that doesn't involve waking up before the birds. The use of a crate and positive reinforcement is always strongly recommended. You should never punish a dog for going to the bathroom in the house - it only makes them more anxious about it and will make the process longer."

Are beagles good with kids?

Yes!! Of course there are exceptions, but generally beagles make GREAT family dogs. They are bred to be in a pack and therefore have excellent pack social skills. They are generally happy go lucky and love to be around their people. Older beagles may be less tolerant of the pokey-pulling action of smaller children, but by and large the beagle is hard-wired to be a kid's best friend.

What health problems do beagles have?

Beagles are generally a pretty healthy breed. They are prone to obesity as they age because they love, love, love food. Beagles do tend to have the most problems with their ears. Those long soft ears act as great barriers to dirt and other foreign objects as they sniff their way through the brush, but they are also great barriers to letting moisture out and fresh air in. Beagles are prone to ear yeast infections that in some dogs can become chronic. You will see beagles with fatty \tumors\" called lypomas, and as some beagles age they may get cysts. We call them \"old dog lumps and bumps\" and they are usually benign but should always be checked by a vet.

What colors do beagles come in?

Beagles can come in a variety of colors and patterns. The most common is of course the \tri-color\" - black white and brown, with a clear saddle marking. Another common coloration is red where the black pigment is sometimes missing entirely. There are also lemon beagles, which are less common, and ticked beagles - red or black/blue - that seem to be more common in the South.
