The SOS (Save Our Snoopies) Beagle Rescue is a non-profit organization dedicated to saving the lives of beagles by sheltering homeless or abandoned dogs and adopting them to loving homes.

Our chapters are currently located in both New Jersey and Tennessee.  We do not, however, have an actual shelter or facility for you to visit in New Jersey. All of our beagles are in foster care or with their owners.

If you are not in our areas surrounding Tennessee and New Jersey,  please consult our Rescue Locator Map for other beagle rescues in the U.S.

In Memory of Garth

My companion of 27 years and SOS Director, Garth Elwell, died on March 20 after an 8 yr. battle with mantle cell lymphoma. After many different types of chemo, most of which had some success in battling the disease at least temporarily, there were no treatment options left when a mass in his chest appeared in January. Radiation was done as a palliative measure since it was constricting his windpipe.

Mantle cell lyphoma has an average life expectancy of 3 years, so we were blessed with much extra time. Except for about 5 months in 2005 when Garth spent 45 days in the hospital with surgery, he had few side effects. It was only in the last month, after radiation therapy to reduce the mass in his chest, that he became quite fatigued and had little energy. He fought to the end, only accepting his fate on Saturday, and had little discomfort. He had been in hospice care here at home for approximately four weeks when his disease progressed quickly. Even the hospice workers were surprised, seeing a normal 4 week progression in a matter of 4 days.

Garth wanted no services, no fanfair. Please, no flowers. Anyone who would like to remember him is encouraged to donate blood in his memory, if they can. Memorial contributions are also being accepted as part of Dot's fund. After a short period to adjust and mourn, I will begin my search to relocate back to the NJ area. Thank you all for understanding if my replies to the list and individuals is slow for the immediate future.
