Are beagles hard to housebreak? E-mail
Friday, 08 February 2008

The short answer to this is yes and no. Beagle puppies can be hard to housebreak because beagles are, well, a bit stubborn. They also have the second best nose in the dog world (#1 is the bloodhound) and no matter how much you clean that rug - they are still going to know it was a former pee spot and be more likely to use it again. Adult dogs are usually easier to housebreak because they are physically able to "hold it" for longer periods of time than puppies, giving you an easier time of it in getting on a schedule that doesn't involve waking up before the birds. The use of a crate and positive reinforcement is always strongly recommended. You should never punish a dog for going to the bathroom in the house - it only makes them more anxious about it and will make the process longer.
