We totally cannot figure out why he loves dirt. He goes out into the yard and just digs himself a little snack pit and chows down. Now our beagle/Lab will dig for grubs (seriously), and of course many dogs like to snack of fresh spring grass. But Manny's obsession with red Georgia dirt has us baffled.

Our best guess is that he thinks he's hungry. Wherever he came from he was undoubtedly fed table scraps. Any time you go into the kitchen to get coffee or water or whatever, he's right there, looking up at the counter expectantly. We have trimmed him down to a healthier weight by taking him for walks and cutting down his food intake.

So perhaps Manny's dirt really is just a snack between meals when he's feeling a bit peckish. Our vet said it was nothing to worry about unless there were other problems like vomiting or weird poo. So far none of that has shown up, so for now we just try and keep him from starting new holes in the yard.
