"Pocket beagle" is a term used by unscrupulous backyard (and sometimes puppymill) breeders to sell you a very small beagle that most likely has some serious health problems. "Pocket beagles" today come from either breeding in dwarfism, or cross-breeding with Dachshunds, or both. The term comes originally from the very small beagles that were bred around the time of Queen Elizabeth (the first). They were hunting dogs and were sturdy and athletic, despite their small size.

There are 13" beagles that occasionally come out smaller than breed standard, but they should never be sold as "pocket" and they should not have any appearance of dwarfism.

A beagle is a beagle no matter the size and we strongly discourage anyone from getting a dog simply because it is adorable, or tiny, or in Paris Hilton's purse.
