Atlanta Beagle Rescue is not a shelter. We do not have a shelter facility. All our dogs are housed in foster homes. We are usually full. The demand for placement far outstrips the adoption applications we receive. Take a moment to look at our Urgent Shelter Dog list. Those dogs are in very real danger of being euthanized simply because there is not enough room; at the shelter or with rescue groups.
We do NOT take owner surrender dogs into foster space (excluding certain clearly defined circumstances). Those foster spots are reserved for dogs that come from shelters that would otherwise die.
If you have adopted this dog from a rescue or purchased from a breeder, you need to contact them first. Most adoption contracts (including ours) and most breeder contracts specify that you must return the dog to them if you are unable to care for it any more.
"Why are you doing this? Don't you want to help beagles in need?"
There are varying levels of need. A dog that sits unclaimed in a rural shelter that has no adoptions is in much more need than an owned dog with a busy family. We kind of got away from our core mission which is to save beagles that would otherwise be euthanized at shelters. We are rededicating ourselves to this mission and we hope that those who think they do not have enough time for their pet will re-evaluate their schedule and find the time. Dogs demand so little from us.
