Louie came to us from, you guessed it, Louisville, KY. Thanks to the kindness of strangers we were able to get Louie out of a municipal shelter where he had no chance of adoption and down to Atlanta where he has made himself at home in our house.
Louie has been to the ophthalmologist and the verdict is... he's blind. Well, we knew that but we wanted to see what else the doctor could tell us. Apparently he started out with Progressive Retinal Atrophy, which is not uncommon in beagles. He has been blind for a while and developed cataracts because of the PRA. There is no chance of restoring his vision. His tear production test was great and pressures were totally normal so the vet thinks that while he may or may not need medical intervention later, for now he is a-okay!
Louie is a super duper sweetie pie and gets around just fine. When you see him out in the yard there is almost no way you could tell he's not sighted. He is now house-broken and doesn't even stay in the crate any more.
Even if you have no experience with a blind dog, with our support and a little preparation Louie would make a wonderful addition to almost any family.
